Battle Athletes Volume 2 - Review Battle Athletes Volume 2 'Ready…' (Mission 3 and 4) If you liked the first volume (Mission 1 & 2) of this 6 episode OVA series, then chances are you will love the second volume. Mission 3: Screaming Advance The first noticeable thing about this episode is it occurs much in the school year. Episodes 1 and 2 were set within the first 2 weeks of the Academy term. The 3rd episode starts right as mid-terms begin, a pretty big difference if you do the math. Akari and her friends are the first up in testing as they must complete "A.R.M.S. Orienteering in an orbital elevator." Things are going well until Mylandah (a Ifurtia look-a-like) decides to sabotage things. What insues is a non-stop action adventure as Akari, Kris, and Anna must escape the station before it crashes into the Earth's atmosphere where gravity will bring them to a firery death. And then if they do manage to escape, how can they possible survive the hot springs? Mission 4: Match Unexpected This episode seems to be set EVEN later in the year than Mission 3, as the annual University Satellite vs. Boy's School brings three specially chosen girls and boys against each other in a game of "Acro Spike" (a combination of Volleyball and Soccer) with the University Satellite Headmaster job at stake. And you won't believe the secret weapon each team packs… Video Quality: Pioneer's Quality is always superb with very few bad quality copies. But, I did notice 2 instances of VHS quality breaching. Both deal with the Academy seal where the red in it streaks in lines. No other noticeable instances. Sound Quality: Very excellent all the way through except during a one spot in Mission 3 when a 'popping and crackling' sound was noticeable in the front right Dolby speaker. This was only a rarity and was not repeated again on my tape. Available on VHS English Dubbed or English Subtitled (DVD version coming soon), 60 minutes, Rated 13 & Up. Review By: Adam "OMEGA" Arnold, VHS DUBBED version reviewed. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.) Review/Synopsis of BGC 2040 TV #1 Bubblegum Crisis 2040 TV Episode 1: BY Ben Cantrick (mackys@dim.com) Synopsis: Linna's appears on screen in a subway station looking in a glass window, checking out her clothes in preperation for her first day on the job at her new job in Tokyo. It's obvious this is her first time in Tokyo, she seems to be a bit of a country girl. (Her friend makes a remark to that effect.) Linna bumps into a street-cleaning boomer on the street and apologizes to it. Her friend tells her it's silly to apologize to boomers. She asks her friend about the KS. Roll opening animation. Episode 1 title: "Can't Buy A Thrill." Now we're following a tether up high off the planet to a space station. Cut to the inside of Quincy's sanctum. We hear his breathing and see a shot of his hand. And we see an external shot of the new Genom tower. ("More phallic than ever." -Ben) Cut back to Linna and her friend on the street. Priss zooms by too close on her motorcycle, sending Linna in her heels sprawling. Linna does not take this well. She goes chasing after Priss. Priss stops briefly and points out by means of a gesture that Linna has a small cut on her forehead. (Plot point!) Then zooms off again. Linna chases Priss down the building's parking garage, finally sliding down a pole fire-man style and halting Priss just as she gets to street level. Her left high-heel breaks off. Priss twists the throttle and spins her motorcycle around and takes off the other direction, easily dodging the broken shoe thrown by Linna. Linna cries at this point. (!) Linna goes in to meet her boss (minus a shoe) who looks like Jynnai from El Hazard. She then meets the supervisor of the office, a female boomer. The female boomer either doesn't have a sense of humor or hides it well. Linna is assigned mopping the floor duty that day. Cut to helicopters above MegaTokyo. We see the new utterly hard-assed Leon driving around. He's in remote contact with Nene briefly. Cut back to Linna and Jynnai out on a date walking around the no longer so pristine night streets of MegaTokyo. Her boss starts to put some unwelcome moves on her. Linna incidentally recognizes the eyes of the woman on a Sekeria poster and adds 1 and 1 to get 2. Linna and Jynnai go to a restaurant on top of a skyscraper. Below them is a building being built by boomers. One boomer goes nuts and begins to warp and morph slightly, fusion boomer style. Walking around on all 4s, the psycho boomer rampages its way into the building where Linna is just about to smack Jynnai for an overly friendly hand on her thigh. Predictably, there's a panic as the mad boomer starts to destroy the restaurant. Jynnai cowardly sprints for the exit, knocking Linna down in the process. Cut to Priss sitting on her bike outside the city. She gets paged by Sylia with a message that a boomer is running amok. Back in the restaurant, the boomer spots Linna and starts chasing her. She flees onto the fire stairs. The stairs start to come lose from the weight of the boomer. The situation is going from bad to worse when a blue and a pink hardsuit show up. The blue hardsuit starts to battle off the boomer, gesturing for Linna to let drop. The blue hardsuit uses the same gesture Priss did earlier, and Linna in her surprise lets go. Nene catches her on the way down. The stairs finally collapse completely. What's left of the boomer falls down with it. Splut. The ADPolice pull up ten seconds later, to find a lone Linna standing unharmed near the crumpled up remains of a boomer and some fire stairs. The next morning Linna goes in to work, and briefly flirts with Jynnai. A second later, she decks him a good one. Later that day, Priss is finishing a set at Hot Legs. Linna is waiting for her as she steps out the door. Priss rides off abruptly without answering any of Linna's questions. Cue ending animation. It's sort of strange and trippy. Interesting though, at least at first. + Ben sez: Well, first the opening animation. I like it. However, I think the music sucks. (Not as bad as Priss's supposed song in ep. 2 but it could have been better.) There's good music later on in the episode when Linna and Jynnai (sorry, can't help but call him that) are walking around the nightclub scene. Speaking of (k)night scenes, MegaTokyo 2040 may be brite 'n shiny during the day, but it turns dark and cyberpunk pretty quick when the sun sets. Good, this. There's a bit of Linna chacter development in this episode, which is good. However, the first cliche of BGC 2040 appears: "All people who were "tough" in the original TV series are total assholes here." This means Priss and Leon. However, I do like the new Priss still. She's just real cold. Characters, characters... Silly-ya is not very good. I dislike the new one as opposed to the old. The new Nene is not blonde in IQ. She's actually very mischevious and, as usual, a good hacker. We get to see the suits in action. A little "cartoony" in this episode for my tastes. This gets better as we go, though. Offhand, that's all the impressions I got of BGC 2040 TV ep #1. Let me turn it over to TenchiKen who will give you some hopefully more objective summation and comment on the first episode. + [Tenchiken] Who me? Objective? Hah! I will admit to the fact that while I enjoy BGC OVA, I have never been a huge fan, save the redheaded Russian Goddess. In many ways, AIC still has a lot to answer for, due to the TenchiTV, STM, and El-Hazzard TV series. Their last efforts, Vampire Miyu, Daiundokai, El-Hazard TV2 have all been excelent. BGC TV starts a bit slow, but picks up speed. I love the quality of the animation. The hard suits are much more "solid" for lack of a better term. Linna still resembles Sakuya from STM, but she does manage to be a slightly interesting character. Priss has few lines, but her old personality is lurking under the covers. Leon is very hard edged. Linna shows off a bit, but it is Priss who gives away her identity, not Linna guessing. The gritty edge of BGC is still present, but you get a strong feeling that it is a earlier time in the development of Mega Tokyo. Boomers are just now starting to go nuts. ADP does not yet hand out large enough weapons to effectivly stop them. I think that about covers it... ~Source: Posted to the Anime/Manga Forum Message Board by Jeanne Hedge,AsstOp, 75512,1214, which originally appeared on alt.fan.bgcrisis,rec.arts.anime.misc ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.) Anime Tidbits + 'END OF EVA' RUMOR: A.D. Vision's position when I went to Anime Expo is that they were not interested in the title due to the large amount of money that Gainax demanded. When everybody asked them for a specific anime title they were very defensive in pointing out the vast load on their work schedule (with 4 or 5 T.V. series being released this year alone). Now it comes to pass that they may have done a 180 and are actively presuing the title according to the Anime News Network. My Guess is that they'd be releasing the longest and most complete of them. "End of Evangelion" -- - John Hokanson Jr. ++ Cartoon Network has just started promoting the 17 new dubbed episodes of SAILOR MOON which aired in Canada last year. They will start airing on November 30 at 4:00 PM under the title 'Sailor Moon: The Lost Episodes'. For many this will be the first time they will be able to see the end of Sailor Moon R. Which, in my opinion, has some of the best action and non-stop plotlines (It tells a continus linked story all the way through) of any of the episodes aired. These aren't to be moissed. +++ Here's an exerpt from that interview with Neil Gaiman, about "Princess Mononoke". The full interview can be found by going to http://www.scifi.com/transcripts/ -Moderator: to : I've heard that you are doing the script for Mononoke Hime (The Phantom Princess)... how is the script coming and have you heard a approximate date of release for the movie? -Neil: The script was finished in June or July, and they have already recorded half of it... I'm really happy with it. It is an astonishing film. I've seen tapes with some of the voice parts Claire Danes, BillY Crudup, Minnie Driver and Gillian Anderson so far and it's really tight. Sometimes I miss lines I wrote that didn't work because they didn't quite match the mouth movements, but that's one of the things you just have to put up with when you're doing a foreign script. It will be released commercially into cinemas in 99 -- exactly WHEN in '99 is up to Miramax. ++ Sci-Fi Channel Anime Schedule (All times given are Eastern Standard Time) Sat, November 14 11:00 AM - ANIME - ADIEU: GALAXY EXPRESS 999 Sat, November 28 11:00 AM - ANIME - FATAL FURY Sat, December 5 11:00 AM - ANIME - GALL FORCE: ETERNAL STORY Sat, December 12 11:00 AM - ANIME - ROUJIN Z Sat, December 19 11:00 AM - ANIME - 8 MAN AFTER Sat, December 26 11:00 AM - ANIME - ROBOT CARNIVAL ~Source: http://www.scifi.com/ + Please Save My Earth I recently took a peak at the source code of the best (and probably only) Please Save My Earth Web Site, and a link to two hidden documents that were never completed. http://www.nnanime.com/PSME/psme_beg.html - What Came Before http://www.nnanime.com/PSME/psme_end.html - How Does PSME Really End? ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.) Final Fantasy VIII News ++ More FFVIII Characters Revealed Square takes the wraps off two new cast members. Sit up and take notice, Final Fantasy fans. Square has revealed two new characters from the game we've all waiting for. Irvine Kinneas, a cowboy gunslinger with a ponytail, is joined by a young chain- wielding woman named Selphie Tilmitt. Both characters evidently appear later in the game, and both can join your party and partake in combat. We'll have more on Final Fantasy VIII, including any further supporting cast members, as it's announced. --- Courtesy PSM Online and Robert Boyd [STAFF], 71064,376 ++ Final Fantasy Movie Update Square confirms that its feature-length Final Fantasy film will hit US theaters first. American Final Fantasy fans are going to get a jump on their Japanese counterparts for a change. Square has confirmed that Final Fantasy: The Movie is under production with English-speaking audiences in mind, and will in fact be released in North America before it debuts in Japan. Dialog recording for the film will be done in English initially; subsequently, it characters' expressions and mouth movements are being animated to match. Ironic as it may be, Japan will likely receive a traditionally dubbed version of the movie. Distributed by Colombia Pictures, Final Fantasy: The Movie will arrive in theaters across North America during summer 2001. Gaga-Humax, the film's Asian distributor, has yet to announce a date for its release in Japan. --- Courtesy PSM Online and Robert Boyd [STAFF], 71064,376 ++ Final Fantasy IX Rumors There are some FF9 rumors going around saying that FFIX will be the last FF game in the series. But since Square is doing so good now, why would they stop? Also, rumors have it that it would be released on 9/9/99, but FF8 won't even be out by then this rumor is null and void. This game is rumored to release around the year 2000-2001, around the same time as the FF Movie. Also rumors say that work has already been started on the game, and it will most likely be on a console other than Playstation. (NO, not saying that N64 will get a whiff of Final Fantasy, just that maybe PSX2 will see the light or something) Also, the main character of the game may be a man known as "Grey". That is about all we know about FF9 so far. --- http://fuzed.com/ff8/ ++ For the latest Final Fantasy news and rumors, be sure to check out a few of the web sites that have exploded across the internet. A good place to start is The People's FF8 Site at http://fuzed.com/ff8/. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.) Video Game Tidbits +++ Minor MKR delay! This has been posted all over usenet and different message boards, but since WD made it official on their website, I figured I would report it. This was posted about the release date of MKR by Working Designs today: "Magic Knight Rayearth is still in the final approval process, but should be going to manufacture soon. According to Sega of America, the disc turnaround time with JVC will be between 6-8 weeks because JVC no longer has capacity reserved for Saturn games because of its current market status. This is instead of the normal 3-5 days that it would normally take to manufacture Saturn CDs. We are hoping for a November 30th release date for this title. " --- Robert Boyd [STAFF], 71064,376 +++ Zelda Gets The Message N64: In an interview with Nintendojo, Dan Owsen - the translator of The Legend Of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time - has revealed just how much text can be expected from the title. "I haven't counted but I think there are about 2000 messages in this game. At least it seems like that much! It feels like about twice as much text as in the previous [Zelda] games." We hope you've got your reading glasses ready... --- Courtesy Fastest Game News Online and SYSOP*Ken Gagne, 75162,3001 ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.) Anime Relationship Cliches Anime Relationship Cliches BY Kierestelli Aradia Morgan I *have* noticed some very revealing cliche/themes in manga and anime that I think show a lot of how young Japanese people tend to view themselves, but they're not the typical ones people have been discussing. In fact, I wouldn't have noticed a lot of this stuff before I met a certain friend of mine whose name I won't mention yet, or before I started chatting with Kenji-san about a lot of similar issues. Most Americans won't notice some of this stuff because it is played for laughs. 1) The girl who leaves notes, flowers, etc. for the boy she's obsessing on to find, or makes lunches and food treats for guys. I have come to understand that this, which Americans perceive as obsessive behavior, "Fatal Attraction", throwing yourself at a guy and inviting him to use you, or at the very least being overly "servile" is not viewed in quite the same way by Japanese males. This is normal behavior provided it's not done obviously in front of the whole group in an embarrassing way and is one way of getting guys to notice you. A girl who does this is not viewed as being servile or easy, just expressing her feelings honestly. I rather like the idea of baking a guy muffins or making him lunch as a way of showing your interest. It's more honest and polite than trying to manipulate him into making the first move, the way many American women believe they must do in order to not be seen as too easy to get. And there's nothing wrong with doing someone you like a nice favor. If you do it more than a couple of times and there's no reciprocation you should quit, of course...but I think offering someone chocolate or homemade cookies is a nice thing to do anyway. 2) The girls in shoujo manga are often portrayed as being clumsy because you always feel clumsy when you are interested in someone...and I think that's universal, not just in Japan but all over the world, wherever people are human. 3) I think the "nerdy boy surrounded by sexy giggleboxes who all want to marry him" plot is an expression of the insecurity or humility many Japanese male friends of mine seem to have about their love and marriage prospects. Tenchi, Ranma, et al. don't have to worry if girls like them or if they will ever get married. They only have to decide on one! 4) I've come to realize thru recent experience and observation of American female friends and Japanese men at cons that there are a lot of American girls in fandom who like Japanese guys, but think that the guys are not interested. heheheh. Not so. The guys are waiting for them to do something to express an interest, then they will respond quite nicely. For whatever reason (fear of embarrassment? fear that they misunderstood a foreigner's intent? fear of rejection?) they will usually not make any kind of move on a female unless she has done them some small courtesy to let them know that she is interested. Just like in a lot of anime! All this pertains mostly to younger people since they are the ones that I know. But this is some of what I meant when I said the stereotype of the submissive Japanese woman is all BS. Being aggressively sweet and demure is still being aggressive. (It can also be fun...I had perfect shoujo manga heroine instincts when I got my first crush at age 7, but the silly American boy thought I was just a pest. Now I know better!) jaa ne! kyrichan ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.) Laws of Anime: Part 2 (of 2) Laws of Anime: Part 2 (of 2) 51.
