Omega's Ramblings A day late, but for a good reason. I went to Anime Weekend Atlanta '98 yesterday. I think I am one of the few people that enjoys going to conventions just to go to the 'dealer's room'. Well, I did add a few more videos, CDs, Animerica's and Manga's to my collection. In my opinion the 'Dealer's Room' was very badly laid out. It was a hallway and a small room packed full of people, so you really had to fight people to see what a dealer had. But I did find a couple of the things I had set out in the first place to find. So overall my experience was a good one for what I did. As for the comic book store I went to afterwards, now that was a bad experience. Oxford Comics and Games has to be the rudest, most disorganize comic book store I had ever had the privilege of visiting. The owner is a jerk who could careless about you buying anything. In-fact he bit off this mans head for asking about AWA'98. Their comics aren't even organized, and the Manga books you would expect to see in Bags with boards, are all together on a shelf where everyone can touch and read them. On a lighter note, be sure to check out the area video stores where you live. Now that the big video store chains are buying 50 copies of a new release to 'guarantee it is in, or the next one is free'. Many of the local chain stories are getting rid of their old movies that won't rent anymore. In my area stores are getting rid of whole sections (Anime included) to make room for the new releases. Even big name stores like Blockbuster Video annually has a store sweep where they sell off their non-movers. So always be on the look out for a great deal. Enjoy the issue. ^_^ Adam "OMEGA" Arnold ablarnold@csi.com http://welcome.to/vanishing.point/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.) Pioneer's Evolution Part 3 (of 6) Pioneer's Evolution Part 3 By Adam "OMEGA" Arnold +Visit The Unofficial History of Pioneer Anime at http://members.tripod.com/~kishin_corps/+ On the heels of Armiage III's release in March, came the highly anticipated continuation of the Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki OVA series. And the US premiere of the ghost-busting comedy, Phantom Quest Corp. on April 25, 1995 on Laserdisc VHS Dubbed, and VHS subbed. Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki OVA #8 & 9 sported a new artistic direction (which some consider to be not-up-to-par in comparison to the original) and a more 'adventure-of-the-day' type of story storyline that has a main focus on Sasami, Washu, and Ryo-Ohki. Throughout this series new gate-ways were opened for the Tenchi experience. From the baby cousin of Tenchi, Taro, on Episode 8, the explanation of Tsunami in episode 9, the creation of Ryo-Ohki and Ryoko in 10, the 2 part Doctor Clay and Zero incident in 11 and 12, and the Jurai family on earth in episode 13. The series game a background information filled trip to the Tenchi-verse that spawns the most controversial characters in the series, D3 and Lady Tokimi. Will the rumored 3rd OVA series ever answer the unanswered questions of Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki? Only time will tell. Phantom Quest Corp., released simultaneously with Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki OVA2 in the US, is the story of "Ayaka Kisaragi, a shapely woman with taste in designer clothing" and her contracted spirit-busting staff. Each of the 4 episodes of this OVA series as separate, self-contained episodes full of comedy and bizarre cases. 'Tea Room Transylvanis' anyone? How about a lipstick lightsaber? In either case Phantom Quest Corp. the series is more of Pioneer's great comedy. "We will take away the source of your misfortune!" May 1995 sported the release of the fourth (and final) volume of Kishin Corps. June 27, had 3 titles Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki #10/11, Armitage III #2, and Phantom Quest Corp. #2 (the final volume). July 25, 1995 brought, yet, two more new series to the hands of Pioneer's anxious customers. The First is El-Hazard: The Magical World OVA. From the creators of Tenchi comes a story about 3 high school students and their teacher who unwillingly find themselves transported to the mysterious worlds of El-Hazard, where getting back to earth may just be an impossibility. The concept is similar to Tenchi in that, Makoto is surrounded by 'Beautiful Girls', but where they differ is the storyline and pacing. El-Hazard has a continues storyline that never stops to look back, and it sports the most human villain in all of anime, Katsuhiko Jinnai. Volume 1 is 50 minutes long and contains episode 1, Volumes 2 and 3 are 60 minutes sporting 2 episodes each, and Volume 4 is 75 minutes and has the shocking conclusion of Episodes 6 and 7. The second new of July 1995 was The Hakkenden, a mind trip of symbolism, sword fights, and betrayal set in Feudal Japan. The 13 ova episodes (7 volumes) of The Hakkenden tell the tale of 7 dog warriors cursed with having to band together to break the age-old curse. Truth, historical facts and places, violence, and betrayal make for excellent viewing. Though the actual animation ranges from "OVA quality to early 80s TV" and dead ends abound after the first 6 episodes are over, for anyone brave enough to make it through all 13 episodes will not be disappointed by the ending. On October 24, 1995 the first of the Tenchi-Muyo spin-offs hit America, with the release of Tenchi & Friends Special: The Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. Set in a new reality from the OVA and Mihoshi Special ending movie, the Pretty Sammy OVA series (with it's tooth-rotting sweetness and hilarious slapstick comedy) is either embraced as a welcomed diversion or horribly bashed as a trivial time animation cell waster. Either way Pretty Sammy is a great watch for anyone wanting to see more of the Tenchi crew. In the winter of 1995 came Software Sculptor's Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki Screen Savor, a item plagued with missing files and movies that can easily be remedied by downloading a patch file from an internet site that has the file. January 1996 brought El-Hazard volume 3 and The Hakkenden Volume 4 whish sports the episode 7, which starts the second OVA series and a 'Hakkenden Digest' which gives a recap of the series up to this point. February 22, 1996 saw the conclusion of 2 series; Armitage III with volume 4, and Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki with the 11th volume of the OVA series which sports episodes 12 and 13 along with the special still cell animation 13.5 episode, a message from both the English & Japanese cast of Tenchi and Production sketches. End of Part III. Next: Part 4 - March 1996 - June 1997 Hyperdoll, Tenchi The Movie: Tenchi-Muyo! In Love, Tenchi Universe, Pretty Sammy OVA 2, Chisa and the Heaven & Earth Band Live In LA, P Anime comics and a look at the POP Point program. ======================================= Note 10: Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki OVA 8-13 have been re-released under the title TENCHI COLLECTION. Kiki's Delivery Service Subtitled: In-depth Kiki's Delivery Service Subtitled: In-depth BY Shun CHAN (schan@cco.caltech.edu), member of the Miyazaki ML. "I have finished watching the Disney's English-subtitled version of _Kiki's Delivery Service_. The followings are some information about this version. In this post, I am trying just to report facts and not to include my own opinions about it. 0. Packaging - I ordered it through the Tower Records' on-line store (www.towerrecords.com) on Tue (6 Oct 1998) morning. At that time the video is "in stock", and I got an email from Tower confirming my shipment on Tue afternoon. I chose USPS 1st class shipping, and my video arrived on Fri (9 Oct 1998) afternoon. Strangely, when I re-visited the Tower website on Thu, it did not have the record of Kiki video, be it the sub version or the dub version or the LD version. I also pre-ordered it through a local Tower retail outlet on 23 Sep 1998, but they still haven't got it yet. - BVHE catalog number is indeed 15891. - ISBN number: 0-7888-1436-2 Bar code: (7) 86936-0907-7 (2) - In clamshell which is identical to the dub one. - The plastic wrap still has the golder "Breathtaking" sticker as well as the O-Cedar rebate sticker. Identical to the dub tape in the aspect. Also, the same coupons inside. - Front artwork of the VHS package is basically the same as the dub one, except (1) Kiki and Jiji are shifted down slightly and (2) Tombo and his bike are gone. - Back artwork is identical to the dub one. - Front description is somewhat different, of course: The English title "Kiki's Delivery Service" is smaller and is shifted down. Above it reads: "Digitaly Mastered Widescreen Collector's Edition" {The arrangement of the above reminds me of the widescreen edition of "Sleeping Beauty".} -Below the English title is the following *in Japanese* "Majo no Takkyubin {movie title} Original Japanese version {in Japanese}" -The slogan "There's Magic In The Air!" is moved to the place Tombo is in the dub one. At the bottom there is a purple strip, on which the followings are written in white: "Original Japanese Version With English Subtitles" - The sidebar is basically the same as the dub, except the addition of "widescreen", Japanese, and purple strip. - The description at the back are identical to the dub one, except places where changes are obviously needed: +The paragraph about Kirsten Dunst and other voice actors is replaced by: "Presented In The Original Japanese Language Version With English Subtitles In A Special Widescreen Collector's Edition." +The sentence about "modified to fit TV" is replaced by: "_Kiki's Delivery Service_ is presented on videocassette in a 'widescreen' version. The black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are normal for this format." +The "Dolby Surround" logo is gone. The "Hi-Fi Stereo" is gone too. The close-caption logo is still there. 1. Audio Part I haven't done any direct (ie left-ear, right-ear) comparison of the audio portion between my Japanese Kiki LD (from Ghibli LD Boxset) and this sub version, but I can quite confident to say that the audio part of the sub is identical to the Japanese one. Specifically: - Original Yuming OP and ED. - Original HISAISHI BGM. - All Japanese dialogs (except the radio broadcast, of course). - Definitely in stereo. - The hi-fi track sounds as hi-fi as the Japanese LD version. Basically: nothing more, nothing less. 2. Video Part I don't have a picture-in-picture TV so I cannot make a direct comparison, but the video part (except the subtitle) is basically identical to the Japanese version, except in 1 place. Specifically: - Original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. - Black bars on both top and botton of the screen. - Absence of any video previews. First the FBI screen, then a text screen saying something about "home viewing only", then the Buena Vista Home Video screen, and then the familiar blue Ghibli logo followed by the Kiki logo (which is cut in the dub version). There is nothing else after the movie ends. - All Japanese credits in the beginning and at the end of the movie are there. So is the "Majo no Takkyubin" movie title. - MacroVision copy-protection, so there is alternation in the brightness of the video, with a cycle of about 30sec. Not as obvious as the dub video, but it is still there. - Tape quality of my sub copy looks slightly better than the quality of my dub copy, but your mileage may vary (YMMV). Of course the video quality still cannot compare with the LD. We know that there are digital alternations on the video in the dub version. In the sub version: - The wooden board in front of Kiki's home at the beginning of the movie (Jiji was lying below the board) is in original Japanese (changed to English in the dub). - The letter Kiki's parents were reading at the end of the movie is in original Japanese (English in dub). - The bread ad the baker made for Kiki... In the scene when a bored Kiki was sitting at the counter of the bakery, the bread's writing is in English. However in a later scene when Kiki was again taking care of the bakery (after Kiki returned from the beach and Jiji meowed on her and before Kiki realized that she could not talk with Jiji), the bread's writing is in original Japanese. Go figure... The above list is not meant to be exhaustive, so I may miss something else. The bread is the only place I can spot where the sub is different from the original version in the video part. 3. Subtitle - Yellow English, video-type subtitle (ie not those burnt-on white one commonly seen in subtitled foreign movies). Easily readable, though I personally think that it will be more easier to read if the thickness of the font is *slightly* bigger. Font size is just right. - One font type, 2 font styles (normal and itallic), 1 color. Subtitle always appear at the bottom of the image. - At most 2 text lines in any given screen. - Subtitle is totally inside the image area. The black bars on top and bottom contain nothing. - Timing is not dead-on, but isn't off too much either. Acceptable, not distracting, not 100% perfect. 4. Translation - OP and ED songs are not subtitled. - Credits appeared during the opening are translated, while those appeared during the ending are not translated. - No credits on who did the subtitle or the translation. - Content of the translation.... this is a long story, and worth a separate post. Suffice to say that the subtitle version: * indicates that Osono was offering hot chocolate (instead of coffee in the original Japanese). * has the angel (during Jiji's comment on Kiki's flying too high) and God (during the bedside chat between Kiki and Ursula) intact, unlike the dub where no traces of "angel" and "god" can be found. * has the "Oh, the humanity!" line (absence in original Japanese). Also, I need to look into the sub version again very carefully before I jump into any conclusions or speculations. ----- Shun CHAN (schan@cco.caltech.edu), 10oct1998." +++Note: You may be able to find the subtitled version of Kiki's Delivery Service at Suncoast, and it may or may-not-be with the Dub release of Kiki.+++ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.) I - Introverted or E - Extraverted 2.) N - iNtuitive or S - Sensing 3.) T - Thinking or F - Feeling 4.) P - Perceiving or J - Judging -- Keiichi is probably an ISTP. But as for the Goddesses, here's my take on it: Belldandy: ISFJ Urd: ESFJ Skuld: INTJ -- Descriptions of each of these types (I think most of the descriptions are pretty dead-on in describing me and some of my friends) can be found at: http://www.rowan.edu/~cusumano/MBTest.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.) You Might Be A Bishounen If... You Might Be A Bishounen If... By Brendan "Beej" Dery If it takes you more than thirty minutes to comb *all* of your hair, "you might be a bishounen". If you then let it blow in the wind, "you might be a bishounen". If you're always finding cherry petals in your hair, "you might be a bishounen". If you develop an instant talent at anything you do, "you might be a bishounen". If your name is constantly being screamed by girls while you're doing those things, "you might be a bishounen". If every time you smile, time seems to slow down and you're surrounded by soft pastel colors and/or twinkling lights, "you might be a bishounen". If your cold, brooding exterior is successful in alienating everyone except a single shy girl, "you might be a bishounen". If that shy girl never acts shy around anyone but you, "you *are* a bishounen". If you are the inspiration for a fan club at your own school, "you might be a bishounen". If you inspire fan clubs at *other* schools, "you *are* a bishounen". If you pass on the president of said fan club for some unknown girl, "you *definitely* are a bishounen". If you think emotions are for other people, "you might be a bishounen". If you can look good right after getting out of bed, "you might be a bishounen". If you're constantly having to settle arguments by playing a sport - *any* sport*, "you might be a bishounen". If you always win, "you might be a bishounen". If your idea of a good time is sitting on the hood of a big 50's style car while you and your buddies cruise at 10 km/h down a normally crowded road, "you might be a bishounen". (OK, admittedly this may not work for everyone... ^_-) If you constantly wonder why every woman you meet has shimmering eyes, "you might be a bishounen". If people constantly mistake you for a woman, "you might be a bishounen". If you do look better in drag, then "you probably are a bishounen". If in some cases, you use that to your advantage, "you are a bishounen". If you've been dubbed into English with a woman's voice, "you *definitely* are a bishounen". If you lack any sort of ability to tell when a girl's in love with you, when it's so blatantly obvious that everyone else knows, "you might be a bishounen". ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.) The X-Files: FTF on Video Cassette Features From Shayne Berger of The X-Files ML 1st of all there is an XF Behind The Scenes @ the beginning, just like the have on the commercial tapes. It has CC and GA talking about the movie. Basically CC says that the Samantha footage is added back and that the movie is vital to the 6th season. He also said that the reason behind the alien's being so violent will be explained. GA talks about the computer graphics, some of the stunts, and her fav scene; which btw happens to be the hallway scene. Now on to the movie. I got the formated version and not the wide screen(LBX) version. I pretty sure it wasn't my tv, but the movie was very loud. I guess it must've been that THX stuff. Now here is the Samantha part: WMM "Ur father wisely refused to believe this... Mulder "But he sacrificed my sister, he let them take Samantha. WMM "W/out a vaccination, the only true survivors of the viral holocaust will be those immune to it. Human-alien clones. He allowed ur sister to be abducted, to be taken to a cloning program for one reason. Mulder "So she would survive.........as a genetic hybrid. WMM "Ur father choose hope over selfishness. Hope of the only future he had, his children. His hope for u, was that u would uncover the truth about the project, that u would stop it, that u would fight the future. Also there was lots of added camera angles throughout the entire film. My vcr has a counter that tells me how much time is remaining and as soon as the movie ended and the credits rolled, there was 9 mins left. Coincidence? I think not. I'm not for sure on this one, so correct me if I'm wrong, but as the credits rolled in the theater didn't that Bjork song play? During the credits on the video, they played a variety of songs from the sound track. "Walking After U" was the last song on the credits and then it went to a plug for the album. And that was all. ---Shayne ------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.) The X-Files Tidbit +++From TV Guide online: http://www.tvgen.com/newsgossip/dish/981005f.htm MONICA HITS THE CASTING COUCH: Calling all Monica Lewinsky look-alikes: It's time to cash in on any resemblance to the infamous beret-sporting intern. It seems that casting notices have been calling for those who bear similarities to Lewinsky for parts on various television shows. The White House wannabes will pop up in a future X-Files episode, as well as in the Halloween episode of Will and Grace, reports New York's Daily News. Who knew that looking like Monica could be a good thing? -----Emily Anne Zoss ------------------------------------------------------------------ 12.) 10 Reasons why Star Wars is better than The X-Files 10 reasons why Star Wars is better then X-Files !!! ===================================== 10) Boba Fett would not have made the mistake of killing Scully's sister. 9) When Fox Mulder has a problem with the government, he breaks into an abandoned facility. When the Rebels get mad, they load into the X-Wings and blow stuff up!!! 8) Leia looks better in a bikini then scully does. 7) Luke and Han take on entire platoons of stormtroopers by themselves. Mulder gets his butt kicked by the Cigarette Man. 6) When Han needs help, he turns to the smooth Billy Dee Williams. When Mulder needs help, he turns to three computer treky geek 5) One word: Ewoks. 4) Cigarette Man smokes cigarettes to look mean. Darth Vader knows cigarettes don't make one mean. Blowing up planets does. 3) Vader also doesn't need cigarettes to have a breathing problem. 2) Everyone knows that the only reason Mulder and Scully use those really bright flashlights is for the lightsaber effect they get in the dark. 1) Deep Throat gets shot, and that's the last you see of him. Obi-Wan gets vaporized by a lightsaber, and not only still shows up for the rest of that movie, but comes back for 2 sequels. O'Connell's Depart Sliders When production begins on the fifth season of Sliders next week, co-stars and real-life brothers Jerry and Charlie O'Connell--who played the on-screen brothers Quinn and Colin Mallory--won't be returning. The sibling actors have left Sliders for other projects, and they will be replaced by Robert Floyd and Tembi Locke in two newly created roles. "The Sci-Fi Channel is extremely supportive of Jerry and Charlie and we respect their decision to pursue other projects," said Stephen Chao, the president of programming and marketing for USA Networks. "Sliders' most appealing element is its unique premise of traveling to parallel Earth dimensions, and we are excited to continue the adventures for another season--with more innovative plot twists in store for the audience." Sliders, which also stars Cleavant Derricks and Kari Wuhrer, ran on Fox from March 1995 to May 1997 before coming to the Sci-Fi Channel on June 8. Since then it has been the channel's highest- rated prime-time program, averaging a 1.5 household rating in the Monday, 9 p.m. ET, time slot. The fifth season of Sliders will air on the channel in 1999. ~Source: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?1998-10/09/15.12.sfc ------------------------------------------------------------------ 14.) Video Game Tidbits +++Zelda Delayed? Previously set for release in Japan on November 14, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time for the N64 has been delayed by a week to November 21. This puts the Japanese version release just two days prior to the release of the game in the US. This move is unprecedented, as most Nintendo first-party titles come out for the N64 in Japan months earlier than their release in the States. Zelda 64 is still scheduled for a November 23 release in the US. By Chris Johnston, videogames.com +++Sega Enterprises president Shouichi Iramajiri reveals simultaneous US and Europeans launch plan. - October 6, 1998 - During a brief question and answer session following the formal Dreamcast showing, Sega Enterprises president Shouichi Iramajiri reveals that Dreamcast will arrive on both US and European shores during September 1999. Irimajiri was reluctant to elaborate any further on his company's plans for the machine's overseas launches, but now, at the very least, we know when to start saving our pennies. New Final Fantasy VIII Details New Final Fantasy VIII Details By Mark MacDonald, videogames.com TOKYO - To no one's surprise some of the biggest crowds of the show were at Square, mostly to see more of its next uber-RPG, Final Fantasy VIII. Two giant video walls flanking the booth displayed previously unseen video from the game, and their effect was easy to notice. Mouths gaped open and passers-by stopped dead in their tracks, mesmerized by some of the best CG ever, far surpassing even the amazing cutscenes from FFVII. Gamers eager for more (that would be us) waited in line and were ushered to a row of PlayStations for 15 minutes with the game, starting where the demo released earlier this summer in Japan left off. Most of the new info revealed in the latest version of Final Fantasy VIII focused on modifications to the game and combat systems. Replacing the materia system from FFVII is the "junction system"; this new system allows party members to "junction" items such as armor and weapons with magic or Guardian Force (summoning) spells, lending them different effects (like water, fire, or thunder powers). Characters can gain over 100 different abilities, split into six categories: junction, command, character, party, Guardian Force, and menu abilities. Examples of abilities you can learn are counterattack, combining items, and decreasing monster encounter rates. The updated Shiva Guardian Force and a new dungeon were also featured in the latest version of the game containing a mountain cave filled with churning lava the players must complete as part of their training at the Garden academy. Joining Squall for the journey was a new character, his whip-totting teacher Kistis Tulip. On display in another part of Square's booth, but with no explanation, was Final Fantasy VIII's minigame for Sony's PocketStation PDA, a Tamagotchi-style game where you take care of your very own chocobo. Expect more details on this as we get closer to the PocketStation's release this December. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16.) A BIG THANKS: To James Schee for logging Tuesday's chat. :=========================: +We can expect the next Legion SECRET FILES in Spring or Summer '99. +Jeff said that new L* cover artist Chris Sprouse drew a cover sketch of all the Legionnaires, but he doesn't know if Chris did a finished version. +The LEGENDS OF THE DCU 3-D GALLERY incorrectly credited the Legion pinup. It was inked by Cory Carani, not Cully Hamner. Jeff can't believe that Imra's chest was made to stand out. Tom's coloring credits are also wrong. He did pages 3, 5, 8, 11, 13, 14, 20, 23, 25, 27 and 30. +Tom noted that they have some "big plans" that are pending approval. +The WorkForce will gain some new members very soon. +XS and Impulse will meet again in the pages of FLASH. Tom noted that XS is physically a couple years older than her cousin, and faster. He also said a Legion/Young Justice teamup would be "logical" with the XS/Impulse connection. +Tom mentioned they had plans for Lightning Lord, but they've been pushed back for now. +Mysa will show up a lot in the next year. +Rokk's parents are seen in L* #70 and #71. There are no plans yet to show Imra's parents again. +A new villain may try to kill Cos. Tom pointed out that if that happened, they could always replace Rokk with brother Pol, or give powers back to Magno. As well, it wouldn't be the first time a founding Legionnaire was killed, since Lightning Lad was once killed and brought back to life. +Jeff's designed a new character called Domain. This male villain has what Tom described as a "harder edge" than what he imagined. - -- Alex Tam goldie@intergate.bc.ca; Nachro2 on AOL ---------------------------------------- +++New Kids In Town, showing in October 31st, has this little blurb on the official Batman/Superman adventures website: A teen-aged Clark Kent teams up with Chameleon Boy, Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl from the New Legion, to battle Brainiac in Clark's hometown of Smallville.
