Omega's Ramblings Konichiwa! This weeks WSE seems to have a few things going for it that last weeks didn't. Namely articles from mailing list and forums, instead of web pages. Now there is nothing wrong with that, but it was VERY hard finding info when my MSN e-mail server crashed. And guess what? The server is still down!!! So to remedy this problem, I finished my moving process and transferred all my main Mailing List subscriptions to my ablarnold@csi.com e-mail address (the one that WSE is sent from now.) This week you get some video game industry news to add a little verity to our topic list. NOTE: Talks with Wizard about the continuation of Top Ten in WSE have forced me to pull the article after 20 issues. If you are interested in helping us find a new Top Ten, or in helping us get a Top Ten for WSE started. Please e-mail me at ablarnold@csi.com. That's all the boring stuff, Enjoy This Weeks Issue. --- Adam "OMEGA" Arnold ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2.) Pioneer's Evolution Part 2 The Unofficial History of P-Anime: Part 2 (May 1994 - March 1995) By Adam "OMEGA" Arnold "Anime--Any Way You Want It!" is how Pioneer primed its' new VHS series of Anime. With the choice of either Subtitled VHS or Dubbed VHS, Anime fans without Laserdisc players could enjoy the growing library of Pioneer titles. First to be released were the first 7 episodes of Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki and the first three volumes of Moldiver. The Tenchi fandom exploded and gave Pioneer enough customers to finish releasing the last 3 episodes of Moldiver on both VHS and Laserdisc. Pioneer Anime was here to stay. November 1994 marked the appearance of Pioneer's fourth Anime release, KISHIN HEIDAN: Machine God Corps. Kishin Heidan is a seven episode OVA series and Pioneer's first attempt at an Anime Compilation. In a clever cost cutting measure Pioneer planned Kishin Heidan to be a 4 volume series to be released on a bi-monthly basis starting in November 1994 with the final volume released in May 1995. The first volume would contain the first 60 minute episode and every volume and Laserdisc there after would contain 2 episodes for only $ 5 dollars for per 60 minute volume ($24.95 dub, $29.95 sub, $39.95 LD). All the tapes and Laserdisc were produced with the name KISHIN HEIDAN printed on them. But, in a last minute decision Pioneer renamed the series KISHIN CORPS: "Active Defense Forces". (Note: The Dubbed VHS box has a 4 part mural printed on the side of the box, so when you put the 4 volumes together it shows a complete picture of the 3 main Kishin.) KISHIN CORPS is a series set during the time of World War II, but the story doesn't focus around Hitler, it focuses around a special squadron of giant robot soldiers called 'Kishin.' The Kishin Corps stop the Nazi's from creating their own 'Kishin' with the help of an Alien race (yes, Aliens). With mood-setting symphonic music, an enthralling plot, and characters you sympathize with, this is definitely one of Pioneer's most under-watched series they have ever released. Most people will just hear the overall plot and skip right over it, but this is defiantly one to pick-up even if you hate war movies. The Green Legend Ran compilation was delayed until January 1995. All three Laserdisc volumes were released in a boxed set. An 140 minute un-cut one volume Dubbed VHS compilation of GL for $39.95 and an un-cut 3 volume Subbed VHS boxed set were also released simultaneously with the Laserdisc set and contained special incentives such as T-shirts. March 28, 1995 saw the release of the second Tenchi special, Tenchi-Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki Mihoshi Special. A 45 minute special told from Mihoshi's point of view with the Tenchi characters put into her story, which delves into what created her luck, and introduces Kiyone and The Magical Girl Pretty Sammy into the Tenchiverse. March 28, 1995 also saw the release of Pioneer's fifth series, ARMITAGE III, on both Laserdisc and VHS subbed and dubbed. Armitage III (The Third) is Pioneer's first 'more mature' release (on Pioneer's current rating scale it is for viewers "16 UP"). Unlike Kishin Corps, with this series, it was decided that the 4 episode OVA series was to be released on a bi-monthly basis on 4 separate VHS and Laserdisc. ARMITAGE III is a cyber-punk story of "Ross Sylibus, a recently transferred button down cop from Chicago and his new partner, ARMITAGE, the irreverent 19-year-old Martian born detective with a shocking attitude" as they uncover someone is killing off all 'The Third' line of Androids on Mars in 2046. But there is something not quite right about these Thirds. They have their own personalities, lives, and they can even give birth. What is Armitage's secret? Who is killing 'The Thirds'? And what is Ross's secret? To find out you'll have to watch the series to find out in this Blade Runner meets Total Recall thriller. Overall, this is a very addictive series to watch, but it should be watched in one marathon sweep. There are a lot of minor plots and something's that are easily missed if you aren't paying attention. But, this the OVA series definitely a keeper. (Note: The movie compilation of Armitage III has some new scenes that explain a few things that the OVA omitted, is darker in nature than the OVA, is shorter than the OVA series, and sports a new ending, but the OVA series does have the better ending of the two.) TO BE CONTINUED… Next: Tenchi-Muyo! OVA 2, Phantom Quest Corp., El-Hazard OVA 1, and The Hakkenden, and Pretty Sammy 1. ======================================= + Note 6: Kishin Corps OVA is currently only available as a Dubbed VHS for $24.95. No re-release has been planned as of yet for this 4 volume series, so all 7 episodes are ONLY available on 4 separate VHS tapes, plus the availability of these tapes are in short supply. + Note 7: A $99.95 set of all 4 volumes plus a T-shirt does exist for Kishin Corps. But, is currently unavailable. You may be able to find it at a Anime Convention or Comic Shop. + Note 8: Armitage III OVA is currently only available as a Dubbed VHS for $24.95. No re-release has been planned as of yet for this 4 volume series, so all 4 episodes are ONLY available on 4 separate VHS tapes, plus the availability of these tapes are in short supply. (See the trend yet?) + Note 9: Armitage III: Poly-Matrix the 90 minute movie compilation of the 140 minute Armitage III OVA series is currently available on VHS for $19.95 and LD or DVD for $29.95. The DVD release sports interactive menus with music from the movie and character bios. ======================================= SPECIAL NOTE: Under the title 'The Unofficial History of P-Anime' you will now be able to read the updated versions of the articles along with tons of other extras at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ablarnold/pioneer.html. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.) Tenchi-Muyo In Love 2 Confirmed A flyer has been distributed in Japan with 8 pictures from Tenchi-Muyo! In Love 2. For the complete picture, check out http://www.tacocity.com.tw/slime/sk/index.html Top-1: ??? / Ryo-Ohki ; Top-2: Sasami / Tsunami ; Top-3: Ryoko Middle-4: ??? ; Middle-5: Tenchi ; Middle-6: Aeka Bottom-7: (January 1999) ; Bottom-8: Katsushito / Nobuyuki ; Bottom-9: Washu Here is a rough translation of what the flyer says: This is a really sudden thing. After the premiere showing of Battle Athletes Mission 6 and the first episode of Photon, a representative lady told us this: "Today, and a special announcement only in Tokyo. Scheduled to be released in theaters [in Japan] next January, work for the third installment in the Tenchi Muyo! movies has begun. Currently, entitled 'Tenchi Muyo! in LOVE 2: A Far Away Feeling' is directed by [the same guy who directed the first Tenchi movie]. As with Achika of 'in LOVE' and Mayuka of 'Manatsu no Eve', there will also be a new character appearing in 'in LOVE 2'. What kind of 'feeling' (rememberance?) will it be? Stayed tune for the theatrical release Jan 99. Wait... we will be showing a 30 sec promotion of this special report, don't go away!" ~Source: TenchiKen member of the Tenchi-Muyo ML. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.) Oh My Goddess!: The Movie So far, the following things are certain about the movie: 1) The release date will be anywhere from 3 minutes from here to eternity. Then again, it may not come out 2) It will be given away free, with the exception that you may have to pay for it. 3) The storyline may or may not be about the goddesses and their escapades 4) The title will be Oh! My Goddess!: Mara Strikes Back. Or Not. 5) It will come on the big screen, unless they decide to release it on video. Or not release it at all I am willing to stake my life and soul on the fact that the events I listed will come true. Then again, it may not...^_^ Basically, we know anywhere from absolute zip to very little about the movie. Anyone want to dig around? ~Source: Jack Chen ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.) The Best of Anime CD: Review The Best of Anime CD: Review By Richard E. Rae <76174.1410@compuserve.com> Today, the ever-vigilant non-anime-fan wife of mine, Debby, brought me home a new CD as a surprise- "Best of Anime" by Rhino (R2 75514). It has two different covers available- one of Cutey Honey, and the other with Speed Racer. Nice package, too, and as a cute touch, the title is in Japanese in a transparent spine bar (and the Rhino logo is in kana, too). A very pretty package over all. She got me the Cutey Honey one. My first thought was that the CD was all going to be all English songs- but boy, was I wrong! The track list is as follows: 1. Astro Boy (English version). This is either a new stereo recording, or some later version, of the original Astro Boy theme with the English lyrics. Sounds too "clean" for an old version, and it certainly isn't an original from the old series (which I am very familiar with, both US and Japanese versions). It almost put me off the rest of the album- not a recommended track. And note that I _like_ the original theme song. Which they should have used . 2. Gigantor (English version) This is mono and is directly recorded from an old episode soundtrack. The same theme as in the US versions. No biggie. 3. Speed Racer (English Version) Also mono, same theme we know and love. Again, sounds exactly like it was taken from a TV show. Clean recording, though. From this point on, the album suddenly shifts gears, and just as suddenly becomes absolutely terrific!! The next 12 songs are all Japanese originals, in perfect stereo!! While all the composers and lyricists are credited, there's absolutely NO mention anywhere of the vocalists, which bothered me no end. Those I recognize I list below with their songs. 4. Lum's Love Song (Urusei Yatsura) 5. Sentimental over the Shoulder (Megazone 23) 6. Beautiful Planet (Windaria) 7. Active Heart (Gunbuster) 8. Adesso e Fortuna (Record of Lodoss War) 9. Full Moon Light (Devil Hunter Youko) [Aya Hisakawa singing- great song!] 10. Sailing (Silent Mobius) 11. Happy Birthday to Me (Cat Girl Nuku Nuku) 12. Just Beyond the Time (New Dominion Tank Police) 13. My Heart I Can't Say, Your Heart I Want To Know (Oh My Goddess!) Not sure about the artist- Hisakawa again?, but I love the theme! 14. Cutey Honey (New Cutey Honey) A great updating of a classic theme, which I have loved from the original 1973 OP- and once again, I could recognize it being sung by the artist of the old theme- one of my favorite anime singers, Mitsuko Horie! Great song! 15. Voices (Macross Plus) I love this song- but I loved it enough to get the Mac Plus soundtrack too! We suddenly shift gears again- the final song is... 16. Sailor Moon Theme (English version) Familiar to all... but Rhino already released the original version of Moonlight Densetsu on their Sailor Moon "Lunarock" album so I'd have thought they'd done it here too. Ah, well... The inner booklet is nicely complete, and has a good essay about US anime-fan history and quite complete liner notes for each song, all credited to Fred Patten. However, I again am appalled that the original vocalists aren't credited at all in the booklet, and there's a BIG plug for Banzai Anime on the last page . Since my anime CD collection is admittedly pretty sparse and focused, I welcome this album as providing me with a capsule collection of some great themes and nice performances from a wide range of series and OAVs. I'd recommend it quite highly- not for the English-version songs, but for the Japanese original songs all featured here. It's a good way to get some "greatest hits" on a legitimate CD for a good price! ~Source: Richard E. Rae <76174.1410@compuserve.com> from his post of the same name to the CompuServe's Anime/Manga Forum message board. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.) Photon OVA 1: Review (no Spoilers) Photon OVA 1: Review (no Spoilers) By TenchiKen The biggest suprise about Photon is that it appears to occur in the same universe as Tenchi. Different Empire, different world, but same look and feel and same concepts. Like the Tenchi OVA's, Photon is a Catalyst, not the center of the series. Kiine (main interest) is a interesting character, who seems to be a mix of Sasami and Ryouko. (ie, She blasts things, but at least she thinks first). Aun, the "other girl" and the adopted _sister_ (someone really needs to check out Kajashima's family) is an _idiot_. It is probibly closer to El-Hazard then to Tenchi just because there really isn't a strong triangle (unless Rasha changes her target ;-) The look and feel just is totally Tenchi. The CPU of Kiine's ship is a animal that meows. Papacha (The villian, who deserves his own section) is a cross between Nobiyuki (OVA form) and Kagato. (only much more stupid). The plot to get Kiine and Photon together is pure Tenchi OVA. Nudity abounds (when you see it, you will understand why I use the phrase "abound") They try to use it for a humour effect, but it is a bit much. The story is fast paced and (for me) a bit confusing (I don't speak Japanese). The Animation quality rules. Papacha is very well animated, and it is nice not to see the absurd SD animation that seems to have become the Trademark of AIC recently (El-Haz TV2, Shin Tenchi, Daiundokai). Kiine's design is one of my favorite, and she looks awesome in any kind of expression. Photon is the sole exception, since his eyes are so huge. OTOH, he looks insanly cool w/ glasses. In short, I think one of the Things that Tenchi has been missing since the first OVA series was that spark that Kajashima seems to deliver in his Anime. Raunchy? Yes, Slapstick?, Of course. A really good tale? Very much so... Synopsis : As we start out, we see a ship traveling in a "warp" behind that ship another is chasing and we see a green haired man (with a really stupid mustache) chasing. As he gets closer, he teleports over, as a piece of the first ship is blasted away. Onboard the ship, a girl named Kiine is suprised by the attack. As she sees that part of the ship is blown away, she laments that her grandfather is going to kill her. Pappacha teleports behind her and suprises her. She tries to blow him away, but fails as a shield protects him. She runs into a large circular open elevator, and frantacally starts looking for something as the elevator descends. Papacha reappears and tries to grab her again, when the elevator stops and he accidently dissolved thru the floor and is flung out into space. Kiine runs thru the hallway, as he goes thru the walls and attacks her again. To avoid her blasts he again goes outside the ship (into space) and floats back in. Inside Kiine is still searching for something, effectivly stripping as she does so. Pappacha comes back inside, but desides to watch rather then attack Kiine. Kiine finnaly finds what she is looking for (some kind of energy web). And then she notices Papacha, grabbing a pair of sicisors, she slices the web, and blows Papacha away. As she does so, her ship emerges into realspace. Realizing that she is going to crash, she seals herself in a sleep capsule (still nude). Down below, we see a group of nomadic looking natives. One of them picks up some of the debreis, and hold it up as Kiines ship crashes below. (It looks like a marker). Photon: Episode 1: Aun no Baka! In a villiage below, we hear someone scream. A lady (kitsune ;-) looks at the roof where there are doodle's everywhere. Aun drew them, and then took one of the vehicles to go admire a rock singer. (Think Mink and Saucer ;-) They send Photon (who was sleeping in a box) after her. Photon walks out to a hovercracft (with box in tow). He starts turning awheel (with funny writing on it). The writing lights up, the hovercraft lifts up, and off he goes. Meanwhile, Aun is streaking thru the desert in persuit of her rock star. Beyond her a couple of bandits load a large rock in a cannon and procedue to shoot down her craft. Photon passes a large floating convoy. They try to strike up a converstation (which I miss) and then realize that Aun is around and they arn't safe with their convoy. We see vultures (or at least large birds ;-) flying overhead. Aun is burried in the sand. The bandits loot her, and discover the pen she had. "Lucky Day" one of them comments in english. They then hold her as their cannon shoots anouther boulder at her. Screaming "I don't want to die" a weird beam shoots out of her mouth. A bubble forms and expands. Photon hovercraft is in the bubble, and stops. Photon, being immune to the bubble does not and takes a face plant into the sand. Half of the convoy stops and the rest is ok (but pulling on the frozen half). Aun herself is also frozen. Photon runs up to Aun, whacks her on the head with the big metal stick. She falls unconcious and the rest of the world comes too. Behind Photon his footsteps explode. The convoy crashes as the bubble disappears. The birds nearly crash. The Boulder falls on Photon who lifts it up over his head. The bandits look suprised and then try to take off. Photon chucks the rock at them. Meanwhile, we are in the capital of whatever empire we are in. The emperor is there (conjecture) and he aproves of the match of his daughter(rashara) and Papacha. Papacha looks really happy but quickly takes off. (This was a hard scene to figure out). Photon is sitting at a fire when Aun comes too. Aun notices the bump on her head, and pieces together that photon rescued her. She is upset at photon for trying to keep her from going after her idol. She wants to know what happened to her "shinki" (the pen). Photon has it, and refuses to give it back. Allthough she is upset she eats dinner, kicks photon, calls him "Baka" then goes to sleep. She wakes up and Photon is asleep. Grabbing him by the leggs she shakes every thing he has free. She grabs the pen, and also notices a picture Photon has of her and her sister (Photon is adopted). Using the marker, she etches "Baka" on his head. Photon wakes the next morning. After a brief and painfull search, he realizes that Aun has fled. He takes off in persuit. Aun is at the other end of a valley. Using a hand operated spyglass, she looks across the valley at photon following her. Ahead of him is a very big cliff. Her finger lights up, and she shoots a time stopping pulse across the valley. It hits Photons hovercraft (which stops). Photon being immune keeps going and is catapulted over the cliff. He falls way far down. With a explosion fit for one of lina's fireballs, he hits the ground. As he tries to climb out of the valley he is in, his sled hits the ground, and then starts sinking. He grabs the sled, and then is pulled under then falls again (this time being pulled down by the leg of the sled which is over him). He get's slammed into the sled as it hits a mess of cables and wires. (It obviously has been there for a while). He starts to walk around, when a robot comes to life and attacks him. The robot tries to blast him with a laser, but the beam goes thru photon and emerges on the other side. Photon quickly destroys the robot. Another comes to life, and chases Photon. Photon accidently passes thru some sort of field that the robot can;t pass thru. He walks into the elevator (which goes down, and Photon is decidedly not happy about this, having just plummeted a great deal of distance). There is a "ding" as the elevator stops. Photon walks into a mirror filled room, and finally notices that Aun wrote "Baka" on his head. He throws a quick temper tantrum. Then behind him, a sleep chamber rises, and the lid comes off. Inside we see Kiine (still in the buff). Photon writes "Baka" on her head, and then she stirs. Photon backs off against the wall but then starts giving Kiine a once over. Then he looks at her breasts and mutters "Ne-san" (One really has to wonder about Kajashima's family life). Photon gets closer to look at Kiine's clevage, but then she wakes up. Meanwhile, back on whatever the planet is that is the capital. We hear a rather intimate conversation between Pappacha, and a women. They are interupted by a few Pochi. Papacha (still in the bluff, assets coverd by censoring dots (thank god) proceeds to kick them out the window (and as the plumment towords the valley below, the continue to say nice things about Papacha). His mistriss (Ma Mamie, I think her name is) (again, one really has to wonder about Kajashima's personal life) watches everything with suprise. One of the Pochi's has scrambeled back up, and informs him that Rashara wants to speak to him. Papacha puts Ma behind the bed, and dresses (from the waist up). He has a quick conversation with Rashara (who really is in love w/ him) and then cuts her off. Meanwhile, back to Photon. Photon is caught in a rather comprimising situation. Kiine manages to ask who he is. Photon replies with his name, and then "accidently" touches Kiine in a place she wasn't expecting. Screaming out "DIE" she puts on her wrist ring and procedes to try and kill Photon. As her blasts go thru photon, she switches tactics and tryes to kick and or serious pummel him. She finnaly notices the symbol on her head, and then looks at the symbol on Photon's head. Unbeliving, she checks again. (She doesn't know what "Baka" means, and there seems to be some cultural meaning behind matching symbols) She also finnaly realizes how undressed she is. Photon gives her his cloak (but it smells) so she grabs him and heads to the onsen (A remakably Tenchi onsen, complete with tree's etc...). Comments: Whew... First of all, this is as etchi as the series gets. The ending is contrived, and photon is not much of a character. On the other hand Kiine is way cool. The Pochi are an interesting comidic element. Watching Pochi's get beaten up is humour yet sad. Papacha allready is a slime, but not an overwelming slime.... Anyways...This series gets far better with time, but this is still a funny episode. ~Source: TenchiKen member of the Tenchi-Muyo ML. X-Files Creator Signs Book Deal X-Files Creator Signs Book Deal Friday, October 2, 1998 8:53 AM Just weeks after he signed an exclusive multimillion-dollar, multiyear development and production deal with 20th Century Fox comes word that X-Files mastermind and executive producer Chris Carter has signed another high-seven-figure deal this time to write two original suspense novels for Bantam. The nail-biters are reportedly unrelated to any projects in the works over at 20th Century Fox, which may explain why the book deal was not forged with News Corp. sister company HarperCollins, which created a new imprint, HarperEntertainment, to oversee synergistic projects. A bevy of publishers reportedly bid for the Carter chillers, but details are sketchy, as both Bantam publisher Irwyn Applebaum and Carter rep Joel Gotler have not commented on the negotiations. Carter will have his work cut out for him meeting his writer's deadlines: Under the terms of his development deal with 20th Century Fox, he will stay on as executive producer of The X-Files for at least two more seasons, and of Millennium for at least one more. He will also be writing and developing a new television series, which has been rumored to be a comic-book-based sci-fi drama called Harsh Realm, through his Ten Thirteen production company. PS2: 04/99 CVG to reveal machine details The release of Playstation 2 is little more than six months away. The staggering news is revealed by C&VG in their forthcoming issue, along with details of the hardware, including custom hardware support for a cutting-edge graphics rendering technique. April '99 is the date hinted at by various very reliable sources for the Japanese launch, with a European/North American roll out in the autumn period. The news should rock Sega, who were hoping for a clear 12 months headstart for Dreamcast. Other features of the system is that it will be fully backwards-compatible (ie. play 'old' PSX games), an expected feature and also the reason why Sony could expect to launch another system while the PSX software market is still so strong. CVG also has details of radical new graphics technology to be found in the machine, and other technical details about the disc format and architecture. Metroid 64 and Mario 64 part II confirmed? "NEWS: In the latest issue of Next Generation (issue 46), the editors of that magazine have confirmed that both Metroid 64 and Mario 64 2 are in the works! In the full statement, NG states that "with some authority...Metroid 64 and Mario 64 2 are in the works. In fact, both titles are no-brainers for Nintendo, and they will all but certainly both be in 3D. In speaking of Mario 64 2, NG tells us that this title utilizes "a multicharacter engine (starring Luigi) and the latest in Nintendo technology," including a planned multiplayer mode. FOCUS: What are we to make of this? Well, Next Generation have always been on top of their game (disregarding the Madden 96 and Blasto fiascos), so this Dojo editor, if by pure hope, believes them. Metroid 64 would be a hopefull Christmas 1999 project, although we'll probably see it sometime in 2000. With the death of Metroid creator Gunpei Yokoi, speculation tells us that maybe the next Miyamoto project is Metroid (remember the secret game that will use the "Zelda" engine?). Mario 64 2 is another story altogether, with rumblings of its development heard for a couple of years now. A very exciting prospect is that Luigi, absent from the first 64 game, will star in this sequel (joined by Yoshi, Toad, and the Princess?). Hmm...maybe it's Mario's turn to be in distress! Again, while we still haven't seen or heard a peep out of anyone in the industry regarding these two games, this is the first bit of confirmation, and this should make N64 fans very happy. This, joined with a strong Rare lineup and some exciting 4MB news, is enough for anyone to believe in the viability of the N64 well past 2000. All we need now is Kid Icarus!" Wolfmill Acquires Elfquest Rights Wolfmill Entertainment, creator of the successful new animated series Pocket Dragon Adventures, has acquired the media rights to Warp Graphics' long-running comic book series Elfquest. Wolfmill co-founder Craig Miller said his company plans to produce both an animated feature film and an animated TV series based on the comic, in a joint venture with Elfquest creators Richard and Wendy Pini. The Pinis, a husband and wife team, published the first Elfquest comic book 20 years ago and are still producing new issues today. The series focuses on a group of warrior elves called The Wolfriders--small in stature but huge in courage--who face a variety of dangers as they attempt to fulfill their quest of finding other tribes like their own and discovering the secret of their past. ~Source: The Sci-Fi Channel: Dominion Wire http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-main.html?1998- 10/02/18.30.film ------------------------------------------------------------------ 14.) Legion of Super-Heroes: CHALLENGE Answers Legion of Super-Heroes: CHALLENGE by Gwendolyn Horton Here are the answers of where last issues quotes came from... 1. Oh, man... three years and still it keeps knocking on my dreams. Isn't there a clock in this dive? What time is it? ‘Bout time to check out. The shuttle from Braal will be coming through soon... with luck, before Mom and Dad figure out I lied about visiting Aunt Ruth. A1.) Garth Ranzz, Live Wire, almost his first spoken words in LSH 0. "First spoken words" was a frequent guess at the theme, but that's not it. 2. How smart is that? From Braal to Titan... with our treaty as shaky as it is? Guess this new United Planets group is having some effect on galactic unity. Still... I hope nothing happens on Titan... A2.) Same issue as before, but this time it's Rokk Krinn, Cosmic Boy. 3. About who? About the Stonn family? You owe them—what? -- a million-five? You're into a man named Prel Dryger for twice that, and I'm picking up... Wow. You sold Krinn's endorsement rights without consent? That alone will earn you five years on Takron-Galtos... A3.) Later in LSH 0, it's Imra Ardeen, Saturn Girl. 4. It was a collar, Stu... and a collar's a collar. ... Huh! Soemthing a lot more interesting, actually... A4.) Not a very long quote, but the longest one that fit the theme, this is Gim Allon, Leviathan, in Legionnaires 0. 5. Oh, I did Earthgov a couple of favors... “Yeep! How dare you sneak up on me like that” (Gigi Cusimano) Sorry. Old habit. A5.) The second line was not part of the challenge, so the speaker's name was given. The first and third lines were part of the challenge, and they were said by Lyle Norg, Invisible Kid, in Legionnaires 0. 6. untypable (not in Interlac, sorry) A6.) Had to keep to the theme. This is from Legionnaires 0 and a lot of people got that it was spoken by Reep Daggle, Chameleon, even though I couldn't adequately reproduce the lettering from the issue. Reep hadnt learned to speak Interlac yet. 7. I guess. I can transfer mass from the stars to anything I want, just pointing at it. Kinda hard with these casts, though. I was in a space-cruiser accident on the way here and— A7.) This is Thom Kallor, Star Boy, in LSH 76. Since he's explaing his powers in the first person, it was the worst giveaway, I thought. 8. Mom's gonna kill me! I can't believe I left these documents behind at the hotel! Why can't I do anything right for once? C'mon, -----, c'mon... Luckily, it's getting pretty crowded in here. Maybe she won't notice I'm late... **NOTE** ---- means a name has been omitted that has that many letters. ---- for Rokk or Imra. ----- for Garth or Jenni. A8.) The missing name here is Tinya because Tinya Wazzo, Apparition, was talking to herself in Legionnaires 0. 9. Apparently, your guardian angel. Good thing you got arrested, or we might never have tracked you down. Follow me. A9.) I was not going to do three quotes for Luornu Durgo, Triad, in LSH 0. 10. All Imskites carry a special aura. It's what allows us to change our size—and the size of any clothing or air within our space. But we've developed a flux-metal that resists the aura's effect and it won't size-change. It's surgically implanted in prisoners to keep them from shrinking out of jails. A10.) Spoken in a whisper by Salu Digby, Shrinking Violet, in LSH 66. 11. Yeah. One of the Daxamite invaders tore them apart with his bare hands. And you know what, Gates? We'd all be dead if not for the Legion. This group is like, the best thing that ever happened, and I want you all to know how proud I am just to be here. But... am I the only one? A11.) The first non-legionnaire quote in this challenge. This was Chuck Taine, in LSH 76, trying to boost the Legionnaires' morale. 12. No, Dr. Regulus. ... You tortured me. You tried to kill me. I won't let you hurt anyone else. ... Not now—and not ever. A12.) Another short quote, but everyone got it. It's Dirk Morgna, not yet nicknamed "Sun Boy" by the press, in Legionnaires 29. 13. Thank you, officer. Show yourself out. ... Mm-hmm. Rond, try Zed-zed-three... A13.) Another giveaway, this was Querl Dox, Brainiac 5, receiving his draft notice in Legionnaires 0. 14. There are similar proverbs on many worlds. From what I've seen— even the time-lost Martians held that belief. This is a miniature of an old Martian city, isn't it? About 15,000 years old. A14.) The most confusing quote of the challenge, I think. This was Lar Gand, right before he chose the name M'Onel, in Legionnaires 37. 15. They wish. You want a straw with that, ugly? You're gonna be needing it to eat with! So much for some down time before the job. Keep the change. Which way to Legion Plaza? A15.) Total tough guy, just arrived on Earth and he gets in bar brawl, this is Jo Nah, Ultra Boy, on his way to check out the Legion in LSH 64. *** The Legion of Super-Heroes: Postboot Theme: Each quote was said by the speaker in the issue where they made their first postboot appearance. ~Source: Gwendolyn Horton member of the LOSH ML. -------------------------------------------------------------------- 17.) SPECIAL THANKS: To XXXXXXXXXX for his assistance in logging tonight's chat. :=========================: Tom has received more than half of the pages for LEGENDS OF THE DC UNIVERSE: CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. He likes working on Paul Ryan's pencilling. Also, Tom is sure that the CRISIS hardcover won't be reprinted in softcover. He's heard that the book's pre-orders are better than originally expected. Tom has a proposal for the return of the Wanderers. Another Superboy/Legion crossover is being discussed. Tom mentioned that editor Mike McAvennie seems to be in favor of another election for Legion leader, but they don't know when that would take place. The Legion team has creative control over Thunder, with POWER OF SHAZAM! writer Jerry Ordway's blessing. Maybe the Legion's brief mention in MARTIAN MANHUNTER #1,000,000 will be expanded on, according to Tom. But there are no plans for DC ONE MILLION's main villains Solaris and Vandal Savage, both known to exist in the 30th Century. Tom is sure that Shadder from LEGION: SCIENCE POLICE will return. The White Witch will be seen next year. The production department changed Imra's costume in L* #65. Jeff originally drew her in Legion uniform, but that was altered to become her Science Police outfit. She's now back as Legion leader. Tom is glad that Keith Giffen didn't use his 9-panel grids for LSH #1,000,000; Tom said that Giffen's work is difficult to color. Tom clarified that Wildfire isn't trapped inside the paper of LSH #1,000,000, but rather that the sheet is a link to the world beyond the tesseract of the three teenagers. The ending of the story is ambiguous; maybe the teens are still in the tesseract, or on the normal Earth, or it's all a delusion. Whatever the answer is, they're "where they wanted to be," Tom said. Sensor and Karate Kid will meet soon. As for Nemesis Kid, Tom can't say anything about him yet. Jeff doesn't mind the team temporarily dividing into two smaller groups per se, but he does think it's time for him to draw Ayla again. Tom said that the Metal Men are expected to guest star. Jeff is now working on an issue that features Dirk Morgna. (According to previous reports, this should be L* #70.) Tom says to "look for a brief appearance of Catspaw soon," and "Zoe will get back to reality soon enough." - -- Alex Tam goldie@intergate.bc.ca; Nachro2 on AOL -------------------------------------------------------------------- 18.) Question of The Week Question of the Week (9-26-98): Would you drink a tofu-jello chocolate-coffee shake? Amy: Tofu you wouldn't really be able to taste...jello?? nasty. But Chocolate Coffee is good! So I'd probably say yes. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: If your space ship depressurized, but you took one big gulp of air. What would you do? -------------------------------------------------------------------- 19.) A Few Crass Words from Kaneda Not long ago, I offered to help a friend of my dad's with his brand spanking-new computer system. an AMD K6 200MHz with 32 megs SDRAM and 2.1 gigs. I hate this. Do you know what I'm running right now? A freaking 486SX! I don't deserve this. I'm the computer whiz... Then some guy who knows jack about computers gets a much faster system... Oh, the irony... But anyway, I took the system to my house and played around with it for a good few days. Have you ever seen what it's like to run a brand-new out-of-the- box system these days? It's LITTERED with advertisements, "free offers", "Helpful Hints n' Tips", in a word, NAUSEATING. And of course, Internet Explorer 4. I HATE Internet Explorer 4. So, I graciously scraped off all the colorful advertising crap, (thus making it about 5 times easier for a newbie to navigate), went online with my account and downloaded someproper programs. Rumor has it I'm supposed to receive a new system, something around Pentium II 400, very soon. That's what I get to smash this system to bits with an aluminum baseball bat. I already do a lot of things on this system that didn't exist in 1993 (when my system was built). This computer originally came with a 2400 data modem. WOWZA! I still have that piece of garbage somewhere. Have you ever tried surfing with a 2400? Set your speed to 2400 and try it out, just for kicks. But do it when you have A LOT of time on your hands, cause it took me 40 minutes to load my own home page. At least I have a decent modem, 33.6. And a decent printer. But my monitor is, and get this... BLACK AND WHITE. Like a black & white TV. It's VGA, but it ain't color. I can get up to 16.7 million shades of GREY. In conclusion, ladies and gentlemen, my system SUCKS. Thank you. That's all I have to say for now. Drive safely, and a word of advice - There are two kinds of people in this world. People who don't finish what they start, and... ~Steve Diabo (Kaneda) -kokomojoe@compuserve.com- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 20.)
