MOVIE NEWS Titanic Sinks Star Wars Star Wars fans around the world were sunk when they found out that Star Wars had been beaten at the box office after its regained reign at the number one spot. George Lucas was quick to show his good sportsmanship though. He published a painting of the Star Wars cast fighting aboard a sinking Titanic in several magazines continuing the tradition established by him and fellow film maker Stephen Speilburg years ago. This gesture originated back in 1978 when Star Wars bumped Speilburg's Jaws from the number one spot. COMIC BOOK NEWS ~ Taken without permission from…. http://smash.mgz.com/newsarama/dconemillion.html Mania Magazine's Newsarama by Michael Doran DC Comics is no stranger to month-long, universe-wide crossover events. From early efforts like Millennium and Invasion, to the continuity conscious Zero Hour, to the more recent Final Night and Genesis, the publisher has shown a willingness to think on a grand scale, though perhaps not grand enough. While it's standard for these month long events to tie into most every major ongoing DCU title and promises of important lasting repercussions are usually offered, they've also often been a target of criticism by fans and readers. Complaints about the crossovers have ranged from lack of cohesion to the core concept, to the tendency for nothing of real magnitude to result from the event. This September, readers of DC's next month-long event, DC ONE MILLION will have to decide for themselves how well the titles stick to the core concept, but it's already apparent One Million will address at least some of the latter criticisms. One thing is for sure, stuff is happening in September, and the effects of the crossover will be felt long after the event concludes. Not only will 4 current ongoing titles conclude that month (GREEN ARROW, YOUNG HEROES IN LOVE, CREEPER, CHASE), but the project will also lead into at least one new ongoing series, HOURMAN, and tie into another long-anticipated DCU project, December's KINGDOM event (for details on both, check out the new edition of Newsarama weekly). Kicking off the first week in September with issue of a 4-issue weekly mini-series written by GRANT MORRISON and penciled by VAL (JLA vs. WILDC.A.T.S.) SEMEIKS, the extra-sized DC One Million #1 opens 1,000,000 months after the release of 1938's ACTION COMICS #1, in another words, in the 853rd century. What could be the catalyst behind DC flinging itself into the far far future? Would you believe a party? One Million reintroduces the 853rd century JLA, the Justice Legion A, from the pages of JLA's ROCK OF AGES story arc. They are planning a solar-system-wide celebration to welcome home their long-absent ally Superman, making a return after spending about 83,000 years living in the heart of the sun. Returning to the present with a little help from their time-faring teammate Hourman, they invite Superman's oldest allies, the core members of the current JLA, to participate in an Olympic-style event on several different inhabiteds world in Earth's solar system, from Wonder Woman's idyllic Venus to Batman's prison planet of Pluto. But as is often the case in the wacky world of superheroes, good intentions go for naught. A malicious tyrant sun called Solaris, aided by the immortal Vandal Savage, sabotages the celebration, and the danger spills over to the current day. While the 853rd-century Savage plans his revenge against the heroes who defeated him throughout his lifetime, his 20th-century self sees the time-traveling departure of the core JLA as an opportunity to conquer the world. But Solaris has an even more elaborate scheme than either of the Savages -- to infect the Justice Legion A with a deadly virus that they will spread throughout 20th-century Earth, driving the heroes, and all mankind, mad. And the key to his plan is a traitor within the Justice Legion A itself. The events of DC One Million then unfold into almost every ongoing title DCU title that month. Each issue will feature the issue number 1,000,000, and unifying trade dress and cover treatments using computer-generated image (CGI) backgrounds. Some books find their title characters brought to the 853rd century, while others introduce the future counterparts of today's heroes. DC promises readers don't have to read every tie-in issue to follow the story, but the titles most crucial to the main ONE MILLION storyline are the core JLA-related books : JLA, the Superman and Batman titles, WONDER WOMAN, FLASH, AQUAMAN, GREEN LANTERN, and MARTIAN MANHUNTER, as well as STARMAN and RESURRECTION MAN. Highlights from some other One Million titles include the first Superman story by future MAN OF STEEL writer Mark Schultz in ACTION COMICS #1,000,000, Connor Hawke learning some shocking news about Oliver Queen's death in GREEN ARROW (anybody taking bets?), and the adventures of ROBIN , THE TOY WONDER in the pages of ROBIN, YOUNG JUSTICE and various Batman-related titles, and appearances by future concepts like HawkGuard, Groddchild and his cyborg ape followers, and the LSH of the 853rd century, Cosmicbot, Implicate Girl, the M'onelves, the Umbra, Titangirl, the Chameleon, and Brainiac 417. Will ONE MILLION live up to the hype and succeed where other crossovers have not? DC promises "one of the greatest surprises in comics history" during the finale. No doubt readers are going to hold them to that... >DC ONE MILLION kicks off September 2nd. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 6.) VIDEO GAME NEWS & REVIEWS Nintendo 64- BANJO-KAZOOIE is coming June 30. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE is coming July 1. F-ZERO X is coming at the end August The Legend of ZELDA: The Ocarina of Time is coming to the USA in November. For those who don't know: QUEST 64 was supposed to be Nintendo 64's first RPG. But as it turns out it is a dull Adventure game with RPG battle mode elements. The game has a horribly linear plot and no side missions. The game focuses on Magic Spell gathering and battle after battle after battle. And reports are saying it can easily be beat in less that 15 hours. I have not played this game. The information comes form NINTENDO POWER #110 and EGM #108. November 23, 1998 is the day GAME BOY COLOR brings the world out of the black and white era of portable gaming. All the old games are compatible and will be made color just like the SUPER GAME BOY adapter for the Super Nintendo did but with the Color Game Boy the old Black and White games will have 10 colors. Also a whole new line of color games will be coming along with updated color versions of a few older games including ZELDA: LINK'S AWAKINING. COMPUTERS- Final Fantasy 7 PC has been released to sleeping crowds across America. With only instore promotions the game just sites on shelves. I also have not played this game (only a DEMO), but I have played and beat its Playstation predecessor. Upon a quick inspection of the Players Guide it seems 2 new sections of the game have been added. The graphics have been made more round. But with the controls of a PC compared to the Playstation many gamers may have a hard time getting adjusted if they don't have a controller for their PC (the demo was horrible with a keyboard). ------------------SPOILER---------------------- Also it looks as if the rumors of resurrection process as still rumors. I did not see anywhere in the PC book anything about this being possible. I am of coarse talking about the rumors of the Aeries Resurrection from when the Japanese version of FF7 came out in 1996 that the game was left uncompleted. The supposed coding out of The Key To Midair on the second CD is still a mystery. At BABBAGE- The Final Fantasy 7 Action Figures have been discounted from $19.99 to $9.99. A set of Cloud, Aeries, Tifa, and Barret is $29.99 ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.) NEON GENESIS EVANGELION Vol. 13 –A World Ending ----------ZERO SPOILERS--------- The final episodes of EVA must be the weirdest way to end a series I have ever seen. If you know what you are expecting then the ending only makes you ‘slightly bitter.' But if you haven't read the scripts or spoilers of the episodes then you best be looking for a fansubber who caries the two EVA movies after you see these episodes. But, that aside. Compared to the last video of the series (Vol. 12) this volume is much better in terms of story, the last video was to depressing. This one on the other hand is a psychological thriller by way of the British TV Series, THE PRISONER, or THE X-FILES in nature. It makes you think. Your eyes get treated to a collogue of images, while your ears are feed the endless story of what happens to our beloved characters. These last episodes are meant to be listened to (or read if you by the Sub). You get a recap of the series through the minds of the characters and then an ending. A must see video. 4 out of 5 stars. Dub $24.95, Sun $29.95. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 8.) WIZARD'S TOP TEN (5/13/98) Top Ten Signs your Neighbor is a Super-Villain 10.
