No doubt most, if not all, of have heard of Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics, by Frederick Schodt. Although it only goes up to about the early 80's or so, it gives an insightful history of the manga industry up to that point, and many ideas mentioned there still hold true today. Chris Carter, executive producer of the Fox series and the feature film, said Part II is set to shoot next summer for release in the summer 2000 movie season, which coincides with the end of the seventh and final season of the highly acclaimed TV show. “I realize it's a Herculean task to do it in that time frame,” said Carter. “But we're going to try.” By the way, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have already agreed to co-star in the sequel. ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 11:16:56 EDT From: AutumnT@aol.com Subject: [XF] Movie sale information... ... or how 1013 intends to take our cash twice for the same thing: X' Marks the Spot At Retail On Oct. 13; The ‘X-Files' Film Will Debut on Video on October 13 At The Collectible Price of $22.98 or Less CENTURY CITY, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Sept. 15, 1998-- Unseen Footage Edited Into The Film Only For Video Release Hot from its smash $80 million-plus theatrical release, “The X-Files,” one of the most-popular and talked about film releases of the year, is destined to become one of the most highly anticipated video releases of the year. Making its direct-to-sell-through video debut from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on October 13 -- a date of great significance to the nearly 20 million “X-Files” fans out there—the all- star, riveting special-effects thriller will include new, never-before-seen footage that will answer one of the long-standing questions of “The X-Files.” Featuring exclusive interviews with Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson, the video will be priced in pan- and-scan at an ownable US$22.98/C$26.98 (US$14.95 MAP) or less at retailers throughout North America and will also be available in the widescreen format for $24.98 (US$16.95 MAP) or less. A special Collector's Giftset has been created and will be available on Nov. 2, 1998, priced at US$79.98 (US$59.95 MAP). Based on the No. 1 Fox Television series created by Chris Carter and watched weekly by more than 20 million viewers on the Fox Network, “The X-Files,” which opened No. 1 theatrically to more than $30 million, stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The suspenseful action adventure film delves deeply into the series' mythology, further exploring the intrinsic relationship between Mulder and Scully and ultimately exposing the truth behind a project that threatens to irrevocably alter the future of mankind, which begins with the mysterious bombing of a Dallas office building. For the true X-Files aficionado, Fox Home Entertainment has created The X-Files Collector's Giftset that contains many highly collectible X-Files items that are not available anywhere else. In addition to a widescreen copy of the film, the giftset includes: a numbered script printed on non- reproducible red paper—as was done for the film; five individual frames from the 35mm film print; 8 x 10 reprints of the three theatrical posters that are suitable for framing; an additional, all-new, exclusive to the giftset “behind-the-scenes” videocassette program entitled “The Making of ‘The X- Files,'” plus a special “Making of the X-Files” book from Harper-Collins. Joining Duchovny and Anderson in “The X-Files” all-star feature- film cast are Academy Award winner Martin Landau (“Ed Wood”), Blythe Danner (“To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar”) and Oscar Nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl (“Shine,” “Avalon”). The film also co-stars series regulars Mitch Pileggi as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner, William B. Davis and The Cigarette-Smoking Man, John Neville as The Well-Manicured Man, and conspiracy buffs The Lone Gunmen— Dean Haglund, Tom Braidwood and Bruce Harwood, plus Jeffrey DeMunn, Terry O'Quinn, Glenne Headly and Lucas Black. “The X-Files” was produced by Chris Carter and Daniel Sackheim, directed by Rob Bowman from a screenplay by Chris Carter and a story by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz. Lata Ryan serves as executive producer, Frank Spotnitz as co-producer and Mary Astadourian as associate producer. Rounding out the behind-the-scenes talent are director of photography Ward Russell (“Days of Thunder”), production designer Christopher Nowak (“The Basketball Diaries”), costume designer Marlene Stewart (“JFK,” “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”) and visual effects supervisor Mat Beck (“Volcano”). The editor is Stephen Mark (“The X-Files” and “Millennium”) and the music is composed by Mark Snow (“The X-Files” and “Millennium”). To ensure the best possible presentation, The “X-Files” has undergone a painstaking film-to-video transfer process and is digitally mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality. The film, eith a running time of approximately 122 minutes, has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America, and is close-captioned for the hearing impaired. From its start as a cult phenomenon when it premiered on the Fox Network in 1993, “The X-Files” has exploded into an award-winning top-ten hit series, airing Sundays (9-10 p.m. ET/PT) on Fox, as well as in syndication across the country and on the FX cable network garnering a total audience of nearly 60 million viewers per week. Entering its sixth year, the series will debut on Nov. 8, 1998. It is produced by Ten Thirteen Productions and Twentieth Century Fox Television in association with Fox Broadcasting Co. Chris Carter is the creator and executive producer. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is a unit of Fox Consumer Products, an affiliate of Fox Filmed Entertainment, A News Corporation company. Fox Consumer Products is the retail-oriented strategic alliance of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising. Visit Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment at www.foxhome.com. Autumn ------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.) The X-Files Tide-Bits There will be 20 episodes and another Special. [somebody wanna tell me just what happened to there being 22?] Much is coming in sixes inseason six. Duchovny and Anderson will have six episodes off. There will probably be a couple of these episodes with pre- filmed cut-ins of Duchovny or Anderson. Chris Owens, [as my dear friend LA said perfectly, “6 eps of spudner? no thank you.”] William B. Davis, Mimi Rogers, and The Lone Gunmen will be in six episodes. Although signed for six episodes, Nicholas Lea will only have a major part in four. Darrin McGavin will be back in a four part story and he will help Mulder by actually leaving his apartment. Laurie Holden (Marita Covarrubias) will be working on “The Magnificent Seven”, but she will be in a couple XF episodes later in the season. There is a possibility that there will be some fallout from the movie with the appearance of Armin Mueller-Stahl as that nasty, Syndicate, scientist boss from Germany, Conrad Strughold. [I refuse to prejudge season six, but lemme just be shot by Ratboy if this is the way things turn out] David Duchovny is slated to write and possibly direct a three part mythology arc, concerning the BIG invasion, for the season finale. At least one of these episodes may be called “Empire.” [a retread of info most of us have already picked up follows] Chris Carter has said that we shouldn't expect Scully to be a big believer in that alien spaceship. She knows something was going on, but unlike Mulder, she may not have seen that BIG ship she was inside. Carter says: “Scully was very, very woozy when she was in that ship, so what she might of thought she saw was through the haziness of her condition.” [ooh, now there's a shock...NOT] ------- Ophinea I just stopped by the Showbiz Daily Box Office and this is the breakdown: USA--82 million Australia--4 million Brazil(just opened)--2 million Germany--15 million Spain--5 million United Kingdom-- 11 million It still has not been released in France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, and Sweden not to mention several other countries that are not even listed on this site.... So the tally so far worldwide is up to 120 million, and surely that is to keep growing....Thank God for the term “globalization”.... Aaron Keith ------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ 12.) LSH: Newsarama Reveals Line-Ups (spoilers) This week's Newsarama reveals the line-ups for the two Legion books (LSH and L* will focus on specific groups of L* for the foreseeable future, though members will be able to appear in either book as stories demand them to). In L*, based on Earth, and Legion HQ: Rokk, Imra, Tinya, Reep, Jenni, Thom, Gates, Jan, Jo, Tasmia, Candi, and Jazmin. in LSH, based on Outpost Allon in space: Garth, Lu, Lyle, Brainy, Ayla, Vi, Zoe, Lar, Jeka, Andrew, Val, and Beck. this splits the groups up evenly by number and gender composition. but let's look at what's going to happen: ? the founders are split up, including splitting the fledgling (well, we've seen NOTHING for a long time) between Imra and Garth. ? the most co-dependent relationhip, Jo and Tinya, is allowed to stay together. ? Reep is separated not only from Ayla, but also from his other close friends, Lyle and Jeka. ? Lar is separated from both Jenni and Tasmia, who both seem to hve been crushing on him. ? Brainy and Gates, who seemed to be working toward a friendship, are also separated. ? the Espionage Squad is split up (plus, I'd imagine Lyle would be able to spy more if he was based on Earth as opposed to being stuck in space). Some pre-existing relationships are maintained by the split (the Xanthuan heroes, Vi/Zoe, Lu/Ayla, Garth/Ayla, Jo/Tinya, Rokk/Imra, Brainy/Ayla), but it just seems weird if they want to concentrate on characterization to split up characters that have been shown to be connected in friendships, romance, etc. Granted the creators have the potential to explore NEW relationships this way, which i hope they will do, especially with characters like Jan, Andrew, Jo, Val, and Lyle, who have few established friendships or the like. ~Source: Basil D Tsiokos member LOSHML. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 13.) The creators would like to do a special Legion “half-issue” for WIZARD magazine. Tom suggested that a LSH #1/2 could feature the origin of RJ Brande. Tom is talking to assistant editor Frank Berrios about doing a Legion 80-Page Giant or Annual for next year. Tom has been assigned the recoloring job on a NEW TEEN TITANS collection for next year, which will showcase some relatively early artwork by the ever-popular George Perez. Tom believe that the Legionnaires are almost always on duty, and take breaks only on request. In particular, we'll see Tinya and Jo take some time off soon in L*. The same characters from L* #1,000,000 will star in LSH #1,000,000, but Tom warned us of “a sudden twist to the whole story.” XS will be tied up in the 20th Century of FLASH for a while. Maybe she'll finally get a boyfriend when she returns. Tom said Jeff is currently working on an appearance of the WorkForce. There, we'll see at least some possibilities of new WF members. LSH #110 will introduce a “new and improved Brainy.” This'll be the last of Brainy's changes for at least a while. Someone else altered by the anomaly, Zoe, will indeed go back to her old personality, but Tom didn't say when. Maybe some day we'll learn an explanation of the anomaly, and if anyone other than Brainy, Zoe, and Laurel was changed. - -- Alex Tam goldie@intergate.bc.ca; Nachro2 on AOL -------------------------------------------------------------------- 17.)
