Major Overhaul of X-Files Slated Fox Names "Real World" Veteran New Programming Chief: Major Overhaul of X-Files Slated. .c The Associated Press By LYNN LEBER LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Jonathan Murray, executive producer of MTV's "The Real World" series, was named programming chief of ailing Fox Broadcasting Co. late Monday, replacing outgoing executive Peter Roth. Murray, whose "Real World VII - Seattle" achieved record ratings for the fall season at a time when other networks are losing viewers, said his first order of business was to boost ratings for Fox's former flagship series, "The X-Files." ``The X-Files,'' in its season debut Nov. 8, saw its ratings drop 26 percent from last year's premiere. Murray's first act was to cancel this Sunday's airing of "Triangle," an arty homage to "The Wizard of Oz," Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope," and even "Titanic," directed by Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of "The X-Files." "I told Chris, we need to get hip again," said Murray "We need to focus on young people." Murray's plans include the introduction of several new cast members designed to appeal to the show's original 18-24 year old demographic. Gone are old standbys such as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner played by Mitch Pileggi, as well as the mysterious Smoking Man played by Canadian actor William B. Davis. In their places, Courteney Cox, of NBC's "Friends," is rumored to be considering a recurring guest role, as is Heather Locklear, star of Fox's own "Melrose Place." Murray said he may even feature several cast members of this season's successful "Real World" episode. Murray also pledged to untangle the series' confusing, alien-conspiracy story line. "For the remainder of the season," he said, "The X-Files needs to play to situation comedy and romantic entanglements, especially among the new, younger cast members. We want to send Mulder and Scully to Australia in a Winnebago." ~ Source: "Akakan" , member of The X-Files ML. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3.) I saw two scenes shot last night Skinner busting down a door with a gun in his hand They kept spraying him with water so he would be sweaty( he is infected). He did about 10 takes and finally on the 11th he hit the door so hard he busted down the hinges .He fell through the door his gun went one way, his glasses the other and he hit the floor HARD and rolled twice. All the crew said at once," thats a take" It was pretty funny and when Mitch got up he was laughing but he was also rubbing his shoulder. The second was Mulder chasing the gunmen he and Skinner where after down an alley and grabbing one of the guys off a go cart/dune buggy type thing and throwing him to the ground. It was getting late by this time and I had to leave but MItch was in makeup getting "heavy makeup" because he gets hit or pistol whipped by the gunmen and starts to bleed(a lot) form the injuries and then I guess the virus /germ he is infected with causes his neck veins to rupture was the description I got.Pretty gory from what I gathered It really doesn't sound good for the AD." ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.) Comic Book Tidbits Q: Was THE MAXX cancelled at Issue 35? A: Not cancelled, just on hiatus. Sam Kieth has gotten into movies. He's writing and directing. He says he'll come back to the comic after these projects are over. Of course, it takes a while to make a movie, and there are two or three that he's working on. So it's hard to say when we'll see Maxx #36. But he says that when it's back it'll be a quarterly publication with bigger issues, so he can tell longer stories without having to split them up into smaller bites. --- Tom Lee (flint@kiva.net) DC Comic's new HOURMAN series has a special preview comic in the new Wizard JLA Special. The hero has been toned down and might just be a winner in the new wave of no-names that DC is setting loose in 1999. Lets just hope that Chronos and Rip Hunter appear in the series. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.) Tom, Jeff, and others agree that the black Legionnaire shown was the cartoon's version of Kid Quantum I. ++ Tinya and Jo are concerned about the whereabouts of Tinya's third body; we'll see them and others searching for the other Tinya. ++ Laurel might be seen again soon. ++ Monstress will soon receive something new. ++ The Legion is split for now, but some members will be seen in the "other" book. The writers split the team to make it easier to focus on each group's characters, and Imra's reason for the division is so the team would respond faster to a distant emergency, than if everyone else was on Earth. The books will still be linked. L* #67 shows Garth and Imra talking, with Garth unhappy about his assignment. ++ Tom also said L* #67 features a "new/old character" now called Storm Front. Other highlights over the next few months include "magic wars and bizzare characters." + LSH still doesn't have a permanent inker assigned to replace the departing Ron Boyd. + Jeff had just received five pages of script to draw for L* #71. + Tom has suggested a Legion "Lost" Annual (an 80-Page Giant with 1960's material) to the reprints editor. + Jeff doesn't think the creators have decided if L* #75 will be an extra-sized issue. + Jeff joked that a black sheep cousin of Imra's family, named "Ffej Ardeen," would be a "cool character." >:) + Tom noted that sometimes Nura's visions can be confusing to her, depending on how far off she's seeing, so her interpretations of her dreams may be incorrect. + Brainy doesn't know what Lori's H-Dial is used for, but should be investigating it soon. + Jeff has a theory that Monstress is always cheerful because the angrier she gets, the weaker she gets. At her angriest, she'd look like more like an average human. He's relayed the idea to writers Roger Stern and Carmela Merlo, but he doesn't know if they like it. + Tom noted that M'Onel will appear a lot in the next few months of LSH. + Jeff used good reference materials to draw the caverns for L* #67. + Storm Front is supposed to be the rebooted Storm Boy. Jeff doesn't know if Storm Front is a mutated lightning beast. + Tom wouldn't confirm the identity of the villain at the end of L* #67; he wouldn't even say if more hints would be given in the books. + It's true that the Metal Men will make an appearance, but Tom says it's just a "cameo/reference shot." +Dawnstar will appear in the LEGENDS OF THE DCU: CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Special in December. + Jeff's idea for the Legion of Super-Pets has been approved, but the editor wanted a couple of changes. + We won't see any "evil" Legion, but rather a Bizarro one. The Bizarro Legion won't be the whole team, but just the opposites of the characters appearing in LSH. Tom says that's "more than enough." He said a Bizarro Brainy would be scary, and a Bizarro Koko would be funny. + Jeff has changed his design for the upcoming villain Ebb, but not for the female Ayre. + Kono isn't joining the WorkForce, but she'll form her own team. ++ Congratulations to Tom for the renewal of his exclusive contract with DC! He had wondered whether he would get it. ++ The major comics conventions that Jeff attends are the ones in Chicago, San Diego, Motor City, and Mid-Ohio. Next year, Tom will attend the cons at Chicago and Charlotte. ++ Since L* #19, Tom has used a scorecard to keep track of all the characters. After he sends out a plot, he lists the up-to-date whereabouts of each character. ++ A while ago, Jeff used three sketches to try out for a BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER pinup for Dark Horse. But the BUFFY editor, having a problem with the likenesses, didn't want to use Jeff's art. ++ Tom suggested that a Legion 80-Page Giant would have an Inferno story, but the Legion isn't getting any 80-Pagers, though assistant editor Frank Berrios expressed interest in doing one. ++ Jeff hasn't ever thought of including cameos by the Archie or Scooby Doo characters. ++ So far, the Legion creators haven't planned any upcoming big stories. ++ Tom hasn't heard of any planned Legion action figures. ++ Tom doesn't think the Legion has an age cap for prospective members. ++ Tom isn't sure if Superboy will meet up with the Legion again within the next year, though Tom and SUPERBOY writer/inker Karl Kesel have talked about it. ++ The next Legion SECRET FILES will be out in late spring. Tom doesn't know if it'll have 48 or 64 pages. ++ Tom "[doesn't] think everything in KINGDOM will come to be true." Tom says there have been discussions about its effects on the Legion. ++ Tom has counted 24 Legionnaires and a few of the Subs, not to mention Legion villains, on George Perez and Alex Ross' CRISIS cover/poster. ++ Despite WIZARD'S negative review of the Legion books, they like Jeff's art enough to hire him for a "Basic Training" segment. He'll have Spark host a drawing lesson on "Space...The Final Frontier." Influences on Jeff's design of the 30th Century universe include Star Wars (but not from the upcoming movie, as he doesn't like the "stupid battle droid" he's seen), Star Trek, manga, and Syd Mead. Tom doubts that WIZARD would want to give Legion a "1/2" issue. ++ When the return of Nemesis Kid was requested, Tom simply said, "Be careful what you ask for." ++ Star Boy and Umbra appear in STARMAN #50, and those are the only Legionnaires appearing there, as far as Tom knows. ++ We'll see the planet Dryad in L* #71. Jeff said he doesn't know if Blok will return. Tom said that a Dryadian might be one of the upcoming elemental villains in L*. ++ Jeff on the Super-Pets: "Well the Superpets won't be silly. I don't picture it being silly or not too silly. Well, maybe a little silly. :) ++ Ferro is currently in L*, but he'll move to the Outpost in LSH, according to Jeff. That's the only lineup change for now. + Jeff will be at the Mid-Ohio con this weekend. + Jeff plans to submit some Buffy sketches to the official BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER magazine. + Last week's COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE ignored Jeff in their coverage of the Legion, so he wishes he were acknowledged more. One possible venue for greater recognition will be his "Basic Training" drawing lesson in WIZARD, which he hasn't started yet. Jeff was thinking about trying to get a cover assignment for WIZARD. + The Legion TPB collecting early postboot issues should be coming out sometime in the summer. + For a while, Jeff hasn't found the right moment to draw a protruding tongue, which he used to do pretty frequently. + Jeff wonders where Tasmia has been off-panel during recent issues. + Jeff wishes Ayla were in his book, but he supposes he could be grateful for having Tinya and Imra. + The coming months will feature the Bizarro Legion in LSH, elemental villains in L*, and the Super- Pets in L*. The Pets won't exactly be a redone version of the old Legion of Super-Pets. Jeff hopes to have Ayla show up for the Pets story. - -- Alex Tam goldie@intergate.bc.ca; Nachro2 on AOL ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.)
