Huge planet and threatening events that span one to three months of comic books at a time may seem like a standard practice in this day and age. Yet, prior to 1985 the idea was unheard of.

Crisis on Infinite Earths became the first big event ever in the history of comics. Countless prelude titles and a years worth of direct issues, tie-ins, and supplemental issues were released prior to and during the year-long series.

Since then, DC Comics has followed suit with at least one major event a year. Some have been lack-luster, while others have become hard-to-find treasures. It's a testament to DC's success that they continuously try to find a new way to tell a great story with men and woman in brightly colored tights and capes.
